The setting isa Catholic school in the Bronx, New York. A Parable is a short and elegantly simple play about that most troubling of emotions. As her doubts mount, those in power keep working to destroy the priest. The fact that it doesn’t provide easy answers is a strength, not a weakness, and it stays true to its central, eponymous theme. But there is also the layer of faith to all of this. To top it off, the dialog is crisp and comes with plenty of zingers.
One man is good to him. Father Flynn is or is not guilty of child abuse; Sister James is or is not a participant in the discovery of the truth; Sister Aloysius is or is not jumping to conclusions based on personal biases — hence, the title of the play.
Shanley was born in The Bronx, New York City, to a telephone operator mother and a meat-packer father. Is he a child predator?
