For a novice like me, it was an immensely intense read, and an engaging one too. They would not enclose each other, although, they would coherently look a part of the bigger picture. In his  “Introduction” to the American edition of Nauseathe poet and critic Hayden Carruth feels  that, even outside those modern writers who are explicitly philosophers in the existentialist tradition, a similar vein of thought is implicit but prominent in a main line through Franz KafkaMiguel de UnamunoD.

I have to admit that I read this book in the summer between finishing high school and starting college – a time when I felt sure everything I’d been taught was irrelevant. Unemployed, living in deprived conditions, lacking human contact, being trapped in fantasies about the 18th century secret agent he is writing the book about, shows Sartre’s oeuvre as a follow-up of Dostoevsky ‘s Crime and Punishment and Rilke ‘s The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge in search of the precise description of schizophrenia.
I feel like maybe this should be read during college, when people get pretty fired up for existential freakouts. I personally cannot claim any great familiarity with existentialism in the wider sense, but the ideas presented in Nauseaaside from offering some interesting fodder for contemplation, seem too abstract and dissociated from reality to form the basis of a particularly robust or productive philosophical system.
Existentialism’s emphasis on individual choice leads to contemplation, rather than to action. At the time of the novel’s appearance, Camus was a reviewer for an Algiers left-wing daily. However, at the base of a chestnut tree in a park, he receives a piercingly clear vision of what the nausea actually is.
It is a novel though – about a bloke in a French town who is writing a book and suffering an emotional breakdown. Hayden Carruth wonders  if there are not unrecognized layers of irony and humor beneath the seriousness of Nausea: First of all, I would not recommend this novel, for I did not find either the plot, the characters, or the themes interesting.
Spanos has used  Sartre’s novel as an example of “negative capability”, a presentation of the uncertainty and dread of human existence, so strong that the imagination cannot comprehend it. I build memories with my present self.
